Onam, the biggest festival in the Indian state of Kerala is here. It falls during the Malayali month of Chingam (August - September) and this year it is from 30th august to 08th September. Onam is a 10-day festival of light, joy, and celebrations as it marks the homecoming of the Great King Mahabali and is also considered the annual harvest festival of God's own country, Kerala.
The auspicious ten days of Onam are named Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam, and Thiruvonam showcasing the best of Malayali culture and history.

Thiruvananthapuram (or Trivandrum):
Capital of God's own country, Trivandrum itself looks like a festival during Onam with all the houses lit up with lights, roads with colors, and people with joy. Just take a walk around the city to witness the culture closely and more authentically. By walking around, you get a chance to witness other religious and cultural festivals happening at a place.
Palakkad:
There is a unique Onam special wrestling sport called Onathallu, which is very famous and has been practiced Central-North Kerala for years. In this popular event, two contestants participate and wrestle with each other. Onathallu happens in the afternoon after Onam's extravagant lunch.
Kannur:
A famous form of worship called Theyyam has been practiced in the North Malabar area of Kerala state. Theyyam is performed by the lower caste community, and the public considers Theyyam itself as a God hence seeking blessings. There is another concept of 'Onapottan' that is celebrated in these regions. Step out and witness the different forms and concepts of marvelous Onam.
Thrissur:
One of the most unique ways to experience the festive vibes of Oanam can be seen here in Thrissur, where hundreds of men dance dressing up like a tiger. This happens at Thrissur's Swaraj Round which is a not to miss place during Onam.
Alleppey:

With the celebration of the well-known Athachamayam Festival, Onam is the best time to visit Ernakulam wherein the festival is celebrated in the Thrippunithura, which is very close to Ernakulam. There is a massive street parade, traditional performances, musicians, and much traditional artwork from Kerala.
