Ancient Sea Forts of Maharashtra

As a land with a rich heritage and ancient history, India is a country which is best known for its majestic kings and rulers. Throughout history India has seen the rules of some of the greatest emperors of the world. Even to this day, the greatness of these rulers can be witnessed in India through the amazing monuments left behind by them.

There are palaces, gardens, forts and many more such structures which tell tales of India's great history. The state of Maharashtra has a number of mighty sea forts which make for great spots for travellers. Visiting these sea forts takes the tourists through a walk down history for sure.

Here is a list of some of the famous ancient sea forts than can be seen at Maharashtra.

Sindhudurg Fort

Said to have been built by the Maratha King Shivaji during 1656, the Sindhudurg Fort is situated on an islet in the Arabian Sea, at the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Visitors can also have a look at the foot and palm prints of Maharaja Shivaji in this fort. The strong walls of this fort were constructed as a means to ward off enemies and also to prevent the damage from floods. The entrance to this fort is well-concealed and also has a secret passage-way.

Vijaydurg Fort

Renowned as one of the most ancient forts on the coast of Sindhudurg, the Vijaydurg Fort or the Vizaidurg fort is believed to have been constructed by Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahar Dynasty.

The Vijaydurg fort is situated at Devgad Taluk of Maharashtra and is a classical example of the fine Maratha architecture, even though it is in ruins now.

Underi Fort

Yet another ancient sea fort in the state of Maharashtra is the Underi Fort which is also known as Jaidurg Fort. Underi forms a fortified island at the Mumbai Harbour. Also, this fort lies to the south of the Prong's Lighthouse. Underi fort is said to have been established by Kahim of the ‘Siddis' clan of India.

Kolaba Fort

Located near the shores of Alibag in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, the Kolaba Fort is an ancient military fortification. It is said that this fort was expanded and strengthened by Maharaja Shivaji after it came under his rule. The Kolaba Fort has a freshwater well in its premises which is not a very common sight near the sea region. The fort also has two main entrances and a Siddhivinayak Temple inside.

Murud-Janjira Fort

Located on an island near the village of Murud in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, the Murud-Janjira Fort is well-known for the fact that it was the only fort on the Western Coast of India that was left unharmed by the advances of various foreign, as well as Indian rulers.

Ancient Sea Forts of Maharashtra

Even to this day, this fort is considered as one of the strongest marine forts in India. The fort has remains of various sculptures, Ashok chakras, cannons and more for the visitors to look at.
