The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) plans to introduce Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology in 50 buses as part of a pilot project to improve passenger and road safety. The system is designed to monitor drivers and provide timely warnings about possible safety risks while buses are operating on Bengaluru roads.
Bengaluru Buses to Get ADAS Technology
According to BMTC officials, the technology will monitor driver alertness and behaviour and give real-time alerts whenever it detects a potential safety issue. The proposed ADAS will be able to identify driver drowsiness, distraction, mobile-phone use and smoking. It will also detect forward collision risks, lane departures and possible collisions involving pedestrians.
BMTC has recently invited tenders for installing the system in 50 buses. The agency selected for the project will be responsible for operating and maintaining the complete system for two years from the date it goes live.
Each ADAS setup will include a road-facing camera, a driver-facing Driver Monitoring System (DMS) camera, and two side cameras. It will also have sensors, an on-board controller or edge-computing unit, storage, software, connectivity, and other required equipment.
The system will be connected to a central backend and dashboard, allowing BMTC officials to monitor safety-related events and access information collected from the buses. It will also support integration with BMTC's existing systems through APIs wherever the required interfaces and data are available.
BMTC has chosen a rental model instead of purchasing the equipment directly. The selected bidder will receive an all-inclusive monthly rental amount for each bus, covering equipment, software, connectivity, maintenance, repairs, replacements, and technical support.
BMTC had previously seen similar ADAS technology installed in 10 buses in 2023 under a private company's CSR initiative. Officials clarified that the earlier installation was not a BMTC project. The corporation will now evaluate this 50-bus pilot and decide on wider deployment based on its results.
