All About Chand Baori in Abhaneri, Rajasthan!

By Siji Ram

When India has many palaces, forts and towers to flaunt, it also has some architectural masterpieces built beneath the surface of the land like tunnels and stepwells. Chand Baori in Rajasthan is one such stepwell that is worth a visit.

Stepwells are stone water storage wells built near water bodies to preserve water, as a measure to store clean water that can be used by the people of that region. Chand Baori is located in Abhaneri, and is one of the largest stepwells in the world.

This 1200 year old stepwell is known for its intricate carvings and architectural brilliance. Built between 800 AD and 900 AD, this beautiful stepwell was built by King Chanda of Chauhan dynasty. The stepwell was built as a part of rainwater harvesting, to conserve as much water as possible, as Rajasthan is an arid land and is prone to scarcity of usable water.

Architecture of Chand Baori

Chand Baori has 3500 narrow steps below the land surface, and over 13 stories. The stepwell is around 20m deep, making it one of the deepest ones built in India. It narrows as we go deep, and the three sides of the well are filled with double flights of steps that take you to the bottom of the well. The fourth side is rich with intricately carved jharokhas (windows), balconies and galleries which were built for the royal family to enjoy their leisure time.
