India is a very vast country, and there are many tourists places that you can head to. Travellers, usually, head to the places that are well known and also have many attractions to keep them busy. But in the rush to cover popular destinations there are always regions that remain unexplored as not many are aware of their existence.

1. Mainpat

One of the unexplored places in India is the small town of Mainpat, known for its Buddhist settlements. The Buddhist monks who came from Tibet first settled in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh. From here a few of them spread out in order to spread the teachings of Lord Buddha; Mainpat is one such place. Though not a major Buddhist place, tourists who come here can see a few monasteries and also interact with the monks who are ever ready to impart the teachings of Lord Buddha. Another interesting factor about this place is that the monasteries here look much like ordinary buildings and also a few of them are only partially complete.

2. Nighoi

For those in search of unique destinations, this one is a must-visit place in Maharashtra. The region of Nighoi is famous for its naturally created potholes on the Kukadi riverbed. Geologists believe that the river in ancient times flowed from the highlands and hit the rocks with such force that created these potholes. Tourists coming here are left amazed by the site!

3. Gurudongmar Lake

Another lesser explored place in India is the Gurudongmar Lake in Sikkim. Located at an elevation of 5212.08 mt, the lake is believed to have been brought into existence by Guru Nanak while on his way to Tibet. A unique feature about this lake is that even in the freezing winter, a part of the lake is said to remain unfrozen.

4. Dharchula

Located in the state of Uttarakhand is a scenic yet lesser known town of Dharchula. This hilly town lies on the border of India and Nepal and people from both places pass through here without any restrictions. The hilly terrain makes it an ideal getaway for those in search of tranquility.

5. Gandikota

Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh is known for its canyon that has the Pennar River flowing through it. It is India's answer to the Grand Canyon, and tourists coming here are left amazed by its grandeur. This small village also has a few temples and forts that tourists can explore.
