Namma Metro Expansion to 175 km: 2-Year Plan to Fast, Direct City Travel in Bengaluru

As Bengaluru continues to grow with new housing areas, tech parks, and industrial zones spreading to the outskirts, the city's metro system is preparing for a major expansion. Over the next two years, Namma Metro is expected to almost double its current length. Officials aim to take the operational network

to nearly 175 km, which could greatly change how people travel across the city.

Fast & Reliable Metro Services

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is leading this expansion. The focus is not only on adding more tracks, but also on providing fast and dependable metro services to areas that currently depend heavily on roads. The goal is to connect large residential neighbourhoods and major job centres directly to the metro, so people use fewer private vehicles.

Yellow Line Metro Corridor

One of the most important new corridors is the Yellow Line. It will run from RV Road in south Bengaluru to Bommasandra in the southeast. This line is expected to be a big relief for people working in Electronic City, Bommanahalli, and nearby IT and industrial areas along Hosur Road. Trial runs are likely in 2026, with services starting in stages after safety checks. Travel time between Electronic City and central Bengaluru is expected to reduce significantly.

Pink Line Metro Project

Another key project is the Pink Line, which will connect Kalena Agrahara in the south to Nagawara in the north. It will pass through busy areas like JP Nagar, Dairy Circle, Cantonment, and parts of north Bengaluru. Since it includes long underground sections, it faced delays earlier. Now, officials say parts of this line may open by late 2026.

Blue Line Metro

The Blue Line aims to finally connect the city to Kempegowda International Airport. Passing through Hebbal, Yelahanka, and Jakkur, it will provide a reliable alternative to busy roads. Operations are expected to begin in phases after 2026.

Western Bengaluru is also getting attention, especially along Magadi Road, where new residential areas have grown quickly. Future extensions here will link better with existing lines and help reduce traffic.

Phase III Metro

Looking ahead, Phase III of the metro plans to add about 45 km, covering areas like Sarjapur Road, Hebbal, and Outer Ring Road. Tenders may be floated in early 2026. In the long run, metro links to nearby towns like Bidadi and Devanahalli are also being studied.
