Bengaluru is preparing for a futuristic transportation option: electric flying taxis. Affordability: Who Will Be Able to Use Them?
In the beginning, flying taxis are not expected to be affordable for everyone. The production cost of each aircraft is around £1 million (about ₹10 crore). So, initially, they might serve high-end travelers, such as first-class airline passengers, who need a faster way to reach airports. The fares are likely to be similar to what helicopter rides cost today. However, as the technology improves and more flying taxis are produced, prices may come down, making them accessible to more people. In the future, flying taxis could become as common as regular taxis, offering everyone a quicker way to travel.
Safety Measures: How Safe Will They Be?
Safety is a major concern for flying taxis, and companies must meet strict standards set by regulators like the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the US's Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). One of the challenges is the risk of fire from the lithium-ion batteries used to power the taxis. These batteries can ignite if damaged or overcharged. Additionally, flying at low altitudes in urban areas increases the risk of bird strikes, which could damage the aircraft.
To address these risks, companies like EHang, one of the leading flying taxi manufacturers, have designed their vehicles with backups for all major flight components. This means that if one system fails, another will take over, ensuring the safety of the passengers. Regulators will carefully review these safety features before allowing flying taxis to operate.
The Role of Vertiports
For flying taxis to function smoothly, special facilities called "vertiports" will be built. These are designated places where the air taxis can take off, land, and recharge. Vertiports will also serve as hubs where passengers can board or disembark. Building vertiports in key locations across the city will be essential for the success of this new mode of transportation.
