Weather Update: Mumbai to Experience Heatwave, Thunderstorms in Coming Days

Mumbai, recovering from the recent strong winds and unexpected rain on May 13, which claimed the lives of 16 people, faces a new weather warning. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that heatwave conditions and thunderstorms are likely to prevail in the city over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Weather Alert Mumbai to Face More Rains

According to the weather forecast for May 15, the financial capital is expected to experience heatwave conditions followed by a thunderstorm with light to moderate rainfall in the evening. Similar conditions are predicted for the following day, with the city and its suburbs likely to receive light rain or thundershowers in the evening. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius.

In addition to Mumbai, central Maharashtra, Konkan, and the Marathwada regions are also expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (ranging from 40 to 60 km per hour) between May 15 and May 17. Central Maharashtra and Marathwada may also experience hailstorm activity on May 15, as per the IMD forecast.

The recent weather tumult in Mumbai occurred on May 13, when a powerful dust storm and rain led to a tragic incident in the Ghatkopar area. An illegal hoarding collapsed, claiming the lives of at least 16 people and injuring over 100 others.

Responding to the emergency, teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) worked tirelessly to rescue 89 individuals trapped under the collapsed hoarding. Unfortunately, 14 of them were declared dead on the spot. Subsequently, two more bodies were discovered under the debris of the hoarding, which was erected on land owned by the Government Railway Police.

The director of the advertising agency Ego Media, Bhavesh Bhinde, responsible for the collapsed hoarding, is currently evading authorities. A case of culpable homicide has been filed against him in connection with the incident.

The recent weather fluctuations and tragic incidents underscore the importance of staying informed about weather alerts and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety during adverse conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are taking steps to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events on the city and its residents.
