Varanasi: UP’s 1st City to Get a High-Speed Bullet Train after Ahmedabad-Mumbai; Check Routes

India is steadily advancing in its efforts to bring high-speed rail travel to the forefront of its transportation network. While the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project is currently the only approved bullet train project under construction, plans for expanding the high-speed network are in motion. Notably, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh could become the state's first city to welcome high-speed rail services in the future.

UP s 1st City to Get Bullet Train

In the Rajya Sabha, Smt. Geeta Alias Chandraprabha and Shri Narayana Koragappa inquired if the government was planning new high-speed rail projects. Responding to this, Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project is the sole approved project under execution. The MAHSR line spans 508 kilometers, passing through 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Surat, and Ahmedabad.

Progress on this ambitious project has been significant:

- Pier Foundations: 336 km completed
- Pier Construction: 331 km completed
- Girder Casting: 260 km completed
- Girder Launching: 225 km completed
- Undersea Tunnel: A 21-km section under construction

Varanasi: Uttar Pradesh's Bullet Train Aspirant

Varanasi, a city known for its cultural heritage and spiritual significance, could soon experience a modern transformation with high-speed rail connectivity. However, these projects are still in the planning stage. The final decision depends on the outcome of the DPRs, financial feasibility, and resource availability.

Future High-Speed Rail Corridors

To expand high-speed rail connectivity, the Ministry of Railways has tasked the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) with preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for seven new corridors:

1. Delhi - Varanasi
2. Delhi - Ahmedabad
3. Delhi - Amritsar
4. Mumbai - Nagpur
5. Mumbai - Pune - Hyderabad
6. Chennai - Bangalore - Mysore
7. Varanasi - Howrah

Among these, two corridors Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Howrah pass through Uttar Pradesh, positioning Varanasi as a potential hub for high-speed rail services in the state.

The high-speed rail network aims to revolutionize travel in India by reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity between major cities. While Uttar Pradesh eagerly awaits its first bullet train, the development in Varanasi holds promise for both residents and visitors.

As India moves forward with its vision for advanced rail infrastructure, Varanasi's inclusion in the high-speed rail network highlights the importance of balancing progress with regional development.
