The Uttarakhand forest department has recently introduced a new entry fee of INR 50 per person for two popular eco-tourism spots in Nainital district. These spots, 'Tiffin Top' and 'China Peak', attract many tourists each year due to their picturesque beauty and serene environment.
Chandrashekhar Joshi, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Nainital, explained the reason behind this new fee. The primary goal is to generate funds that will help maintain cleanliness and implement solid waste management practices in these ecologically sensitive areas. By introducing an entry fee and issuing tickets, the forest department hopes to encourage visitors to take more responsibility for keeping these natural habitats clean.
However, not everyone agrees with this new regulation. Indu Pandey, a former chief secretary of Uttarakhand and a resident of Nainital, shared his concerns about the fee on social media. He believes that the entry fee might discourage nature enthusiasts from visiting these beautiful sites. Pandey also mentioned the underutilization of 'China Peak', which he attributes to the challenging trek required to reach its summit. Despite its stunning views and natural beauty, the difficult hike has kept many potential visitors away. Pandey feels that adding an entry fee to an already difficult trek is not justified.
'Tiffin Top' and 'China Peak' are well-known for their breathtaking views and tranquil atmosphere. 'Tiffin Top', also known as Dorothy's Seat, offers panoramic views of Nainital and the surrounding hills. It's a favorite spot for picnics and photography. On the other hand, 'China Peak', the highest point in Nainital, provides an even more spectacular view but requires a strenuous trek to reach the top.
