Updates on Metro Plans for Coimbatore, Madurai and Chennai's ₹85,395 Crore Extension

Tamil Nadu is taking big steps to improve urban transport in its major cities with updates on metro rail projects in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai. These projects aim to improve connectivity and meet the rising transport needs in these bustling cities. Recent discussions in Parliament highlighted the progress, approvals, and challenges of these important infrastructure projects.

During a recent parliamentary session, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, shared key updates about the status of these metro projects. Responding to MP K. Gopinath, the minister revealed that the Tamil Nadu government submitted the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the metro projects in Coimbatore and Madurai in February 2024. However, the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and Alternative Analysis Report (AAR), crucial for project evaluation, were only submitted in December 2024. These documents play a major role in moving these projects closer to reality.

The approval process for these large-scale projects involves careful financial review. The Central Government conducts detailed assessments to ensure the projects are feasible, practical, and sustainable. This thorough appraisal ensures that the financial resources are used wisely and effectively.

For Chennai, the government has approved a massive extension of the metro network, covering 173 kilometers at an estimated cost of ₹85,395 crore. Out of this, 54 kilometers are already operational under Phase I and its extension. The Phase II project of the Chennai Metro has been approved with a budget of ₹63,246 crore. However, the release of central funds for this phase depends on requests from the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) managing the project. Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the SPV for the project, has not yet sought central financial support for Phase II.

Minister Manohar Lal also emphasized that urban transport development is mainly the responsibility of state governments or Union Territory administrations. This highlights the critical role of state agencies in driving metro rail projects and ensuring their completion.

These collaborative efforts between the central and state governments are essential for tackling urban mobility challenges in Tamil Nadu's cities. As these metro projects progress, they are expected to transform urban transport, providing faster, more efficient, and sustainable travel options for the growing population.

The metro rail projects in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai symbolize a major leap in Tamil Nadu's urban infrastructure, promising a brighter future for commuters in these thriving cities.
