The city of Chennai has been grappling with waterlogging due to relentless rainfall over the past week, causing significant traffic disruptions. This has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert, signaling residents to expect more heavy rainfall. While the maximum temperature might reach up to 35 degrees Celsius, it's forecasted to drop to a minimum of 23 degrees Celsius, further affecting daily life in the city.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the Chennai Corporation has sprung into action by setting up 1,233 motor pumps throughout the city in an effort to mitigate the waterlogging issues faced by its residents. A report from The New Indian Express reveals that the corporation also plans to establish revamped rainwater harvesting structures at 770 locations, focusing mainly on parks and playgrounds to enhance water drainage. An investment of Rs 8.4 crore is allocated for this project, which will see the distribution of 320 structures in the south region of Chennai, 200 in the central region, and 250 in the north region, aiming to alleviate the flooding issues significantly.
Upcoming Weather Challenges
Looking ahead, the week from October 21 to October 26 promises a continuation of rainy weather, with thunderstorms expected to dominate Chennai's climate. Beginning on October 21, the city will experience temperatures fluctuating between 25 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius, alongside thunderstorm activities. This weather pattern is set to persist through October 22 and 23, with the intensity of thunderstorms increasing. A slight rise in temperature is anticipated on October 24, reaching between 25 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, before concluding the week with more rainfall expected on October 25 and 26. The following seven days will likely see partly cloudy skies, with some areas experiencing thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain.
Moreover, the IMD has forecasted the development of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal by next Wednesday, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the coastal districts of West Bengal, impacting the weather system further. Odisha, the neighboring state, might also experience torrential rains as a result of this cyclone. The onset of rain in various districts of Bengal is predicted to begin on Tuesday and could extend until Saturday, leading to a ban on fishermen venturing into the sea. The districts of East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas are anticipated to bear the brunt of these rains, receiving the highest rainfall.
This series of weather events underscores the challenges faced by residents in Chennai and the broader region, highlighting the efforts by local authorities to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions and prepare for more incoming disturbances. With the forecast indicating more rain and potential cyclonic activity, the coming days will require continued vigilance and response to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected populations.
