In a significant leap towards enhanced connectivity, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is set to inaugurate its crucial 48.1-kilometer segment, the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section, on February 20. This development marks a crucial step forward in the grand vision of linking Srinagar with Kanyakumari, bringing the nation's corners closer through an extensive railway network.
The USBRL project, hailed as one of the most ambitious Himalayan railway endeavors post-Independence, is poised to become a game-changer in the realm of Indian Railways. With a focus on robust connectivity, the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan route, constructed at a cost of Rs 15,863 crore, is now ready to serve passengers. The extension of current train routes from Baramulla to Banihal will now reach Sangaldan, near the Ramban district headquarters.
The newly inaugurated section comprises 16 bridges, including 11 major ones and a road overbridge. Remarkably, over 90% of the route is covered by tunnels, with 11 tunnels spanning 43.37 kilometers. Notably, the T-50 tunnel, measuring 12.77 kilometers in the Khari-Sumber section, holds the distinction of being the country's longest transportation tunnel. In addition to ensuring safety, the project incorporates three escape tunnels spanning a combined length of 30.1 kilometers.
Safety and efficiency remain paramount in the USBRL project, evident in the inclusion of 30 curves covering 23.72 kilometers. To elevate passenger safety and comfort, advanced features such as ballastless tracks and canted turnouts, a first for Indian Railways, have been seamlessly integrated.
The USBRL project, strategically navigating the challenging terrain of the Pir Panjal ranges, aims to establish a foundation for an all-weather, comfortable, and economically-feasible transportation network. The project is a pivotal link, connecting the Himalayan regions with the broader Indian rail network, covering a total distance of 272 kilometers, of which 161 kilometers are already commissioned.
There are speculations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to virtually inaugurate the section and flag off a train from Sangaldan, although there is no official confirmation as of now. The anticipation surrounding this event underscores the significance of the USBRL project in advancing connectivity and accessibility, fostering growth and unity across the nation.
