Unakoti, Tripura's Enchanting Rock-Cut Sculptures, to Shine with New Traveler-Friendly Upgrades
Unakoti, a treasured gem in Tripura, is on the verge of a transformation. This popular tourist destination, known for its ancient rock-cut sculptures dating back to the 7th-9th centuries, is gearing up to receive a host of traveler-friendly amenities. The Ministry of Tourism, through the Swadesh Darshan scheme, is backing this initiative to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the site.

A Glimpse of Unakoti
The name 'Unakoti' translates to 'one less than a crore' in Bengali, and it hints at the magnitude of this place's artistic treasure. Nestled in its rocky embrace are more than 10 lakh carvings of Hindu deities like Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha, Durga, and Kali. Unakoti's allure doesn't stop at its sculptures; it also boasts a natural spring, a serene waterfall, and a lush surrounding forest.
Unakoti has long been a pilgrimage site and a magnet for tourists. The annual Ashokastami Mela, held in April, witnesses thousands of visitors. However, despite its popularity, Unakoti has struggled with a lack of basic amenities like drinking water, restrooms, food stalls, and parking spaces. The journey to reach the site is hindered by rough roads and a shortage of signs.

An Ambitious Transformation
To address these challenges, the Tripura Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has embarked on an ambitious project to cultivate Unakoti as an eco-friendly and sustainable tourist haven. The multifaceted project encompasses various key elements:
1. Cafeteria with Local Flavors: A 100-seater cafeteria will offer visitors a taste of local cuisine and refreshing beverages.
2. Souvenir Shop: A dedicated shop will let tourists take home mementos like handicrafts, books, postcards, and other Unakoti-themed items.
3. Spacious Parking Lot: A parking area with the capacity for 50 cars and 10 buses will ensure safe and convenient parking for visitors.
4. Modern Toilet Complex: A modern restroom facility, separate for men and women, will provide clean and hygienic sanitation services.
5. Entrance Beautification: The entrance gate and pathway leading to the site will undergo beautification with landscaping, lighting, and signage.
6. Art Restoration: Experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) will lead the conservation and restoration of the remarkable rock-cut sculptures.
7. Enhanced Security: CCTV cameras and security personnel will be deployed to guarantee the safety and security of visitors and the invaluable sculptures.

A Bright Future for Unakoti
The project is set to wrap up by March 2024, with an estimated budget of Rs 15 crore. Beyond enhancing facilities and infrastructure, this initiative is poised to create employment opportunities for local residents. Moreover, it promises to elevate Tripura's tourism potential and unveil its rich cultural heritage to the world.
Unakoti's remarkable site, often referred to as the 'Angkor Wat of the North-East' due to its resemblance to Cambodia's famous temple complex, has not yet earned UNESCO World Heritage status. It currently resides on UNESCO's tentative list, a nomination made by India that awaits UNESCO's evaluation. In the heart of Tripura, Unakoti stands as an extraordinary testament to history and artistry, beckoning travelers to explore its captivating beauty and heritage.
