Public transport continues to be a popular choice in Delhi, even for people who own cars. Many commuters find that using buses, autos, or the metro adds healthy physical activity to their daily routine.

Delhi Metro Introduced Calorie Counter
To promote fitness, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) introduced calorie counter signs on staircases at 36 stations, including Hauz Khas, Rajiv Chowk, and Botanical Garden. These colorful signs encourage passengers to use stairs instead of escalators or lifts, helping them stay active. DMRC's Anuj Dayal said the initiative aims to make commuting healthier and more engaging.
Commuters' Opinions Regarding This Step
Shubhanshu Gupta, a tech professional from Gurugram, said, "I drive, but I often take the metro or bus. It keeps me active and reminds me to move more instead of relying on my car." The Delhi Metro is especially popular for its air-conditioned coaches, comfort, and wide network connecting the entire Delhi-NCR region. "It's time-saving and helps us stay fit," Gupta added.
For many, this small step has made a difference. Shrishti Dhanjal noticed her daily steps dropped by half when she switched from the metro to car travel. Another commuter, Sadhna Yadav, said, "I've lost 3 kg by walking more. The calorie signs keep me motivated." Older passengers like Anukampa Bisht, 58, say taking stairs helps strengthen knees and maintain stamina.
However, some commuters find stairs tiring or inconvenient during long journeys. "Fitness is personal," said Himanshu Rawat. "Those who care will take the stairs; others won't."
Doctors agree that walking daily to bus stops, through metro stations, or up stairs greatly improves heart health and reduces stress. Dr. Ravi Prakash, a senior cardiologist, explained that walking increases blood flow, lowers blood pressure, releases endorphins, and improves mood.
