On Monday, the first trial runs of Mumbai Metro lines 4A and 4 were launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Metro line 4A will run 2.88 km between Gaimukh and Kasarvadavli, costing about ₹949 crore. Metro line 4, stretching 35.2 km from Kasarvadavli to Wadala

via Teen Hath Naka and Ghatkopar, will cost ₹14,549 crore. MMRDA is developing both lines. The first part of Metro line 4, covering 4.4 km from Gaimukh to Vijay Garden with four stations, is expected to be ready by December 2025. Once operational, these routes will ease traffic for residents of Ghodbunder Road in Thane, who recently protested against rising congestion.
Ongoing Work Thane Ring Route Metro
At the same time, work on the 29-km Thane ring route metro with 22 stations is set to speed up from October, which will connect most major localities and link with other transport systems. The state has approved the ₹ 12,200 crore project. An additional arm will connect it to the upcoming high-speed rail (bullet train) station at Dativali, and part of the metro will also run along the busy Thane-Ghodbunder Road to connect with the suburban railway station. Officials stated that the circular line will also link with Metro lines 4, 4A, and 5, improving connectivity. Around 3-4 km of land on the route still needs clearances from the defence and forest authorities. Once cleared, work is expected to start in January 2026 and be completed within four years.
Under project SMART, plans are being made to develop Thane and Virar bullet train stations into transport hubs with offices, bus stands, and auto corridors. Moreover, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is expected to reach Thane by 2028 and Bandra-Kurla Complex by 2029, where it will connect with Metro line 2 B.
