The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to buy 68 new metro coaches for the upcoming extension of its Red Line that will reach Gurugram as part of its Phase-4 expansion.

New Coaches on Rithala-Narela-Nathupur Corridor
The new coaches will be used on the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli) corridor, which is being built to improve the connection between Delhi and the neighbouring region in Haryana. This extension is nearly 26-26.5 km long and will include about 21 new stations, helping commuters travel more easily between the two cities.
Issue of Tender
A tender has been issued to rail vehicle builders, so that companies can bid to design, build, test, and deliver the 68 coaches. Along with supplying the coaches, the winning company will also train DMRC staff and handle extensive maintenance work for up to 15 years after delivery.
First Extension
When the extension first begins operations, DMRC plans to run train sets with four coaches formed from these new cars. Depending on how many passengers use the service, the trains could later be expanded to eight coaches. The coaches will be built for broad gauge tracks, which match the Red Line's existing system.
Increase in Metro Capacity
This project is part of a larger effort to increase metro capacity and make travel in and around the National Capital Region (NCR) easier. By adding more coaches and new stations, DMRC hopes to reduce train crowds, improve passenger comfort, and support growing ridership as more people rely on rapid transit.
Officials expect these new coaches to be delivered and ready for use well before the corridor's launch, which could be around 2029, giving commuters reliable transport and boosting connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram.
