Telangana Weather Alert: IMD Issues Red Alert as Hailstorms and Heatwave Conditions Clash on May 5

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a red alert for several districts across Telangana on May 5, 2026, warning of an unusual overlap of extreme weather conditions. While parts of the state are expected to experience severe thunderstorms and hailstorms, northern districts continue to remain under an intense heatwave, creating a sharp contrast in weather patterns.

Dual Weather Conditions Across the State

According to IMD, districts such as Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, and Nagarkurnool have been placed under a red alert for severe thunderstorms. These regions may witness hailstorms, lightning strikes, and strong gusty winds, posing risks to infrastructure, agriculture, and daily life.

At the same time, a heatwave warning remains in effect for northern districts including Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, and Mancherial. Temperatures in these areas are expected to cross 44°C, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and water stress.

Areas Likely to Be Affected

The IMD has identified a wide range of districts that could experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds between May 5 and May 7. These include:

  • Adilabad
  • Komaram Bheem Asifabad
  • Mancherial
  • Nirmal
  • Nizamabad
  • Jagtial

  • Jangaon
  • Siddipet
  • Yadadri Bhuvanagiri

In southern and central districts such as Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanumakonda, and Rangareddy, thunderstorms and hail activity are expected to dominate weather conditions through Tuesday.

Hyderabad Weather Outlook

In Hyderabad, temperatures on May 5 are expected to hover around 38°C during the day, with relatively clear skies in the morning. However, changing atmospheric conditions could lead to isolated thunderstorms later in the day or over the next 48 hours.

Weather data suggests minimal rainfall probability initially, with humidity levels around 48 percent and light winds. A gradual cooling trend is expected over the next two to three days as thunderstorm activity increases.

What Residents Should Expect

The IMD has indicated that while no major drop in temperatures is expected immediately, a gradual decline of 2-3°C may occur after May 7. The combination of heatwave conditions and sudden storm activity can lead to disruptions such as power outages, traffic delays, and crop damage in vulnerable areas.

Residents are advised to stay updated with local advisories, avoid exposure during peak heat hours, and take precautions during thunderstorms, particularly in districts under red alert.

Overall, Telangana is set to experience a rare mix of extreme heat and storm activity, making May 5 a day of heightened weather vigilance across the state.
