The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu as the Northeast monsoon intensifies. The warning remains in effect until December 19, with the heaviest downpours expected on December 17 and 18. Fishermen have also been cautioned against venturing into the sea on December 16 and 17 due to adverse weather conditions.

Heavy Rainfall Across Tamil Nadu
IMD has forecast significant rainfall across Tamil Nadu and the Karaikal region. On December 16, heavy rains are expected in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts. The rainfall intensity will increase on December 17, impacting Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli, Villuppuram, and Chengalpattu districts, as well as Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema.
The weather is predicted to remain severe on December 18 and 19, affecting districts like Cuddalore and Villuppuram, along with Puducherry and parts of Kerala.
Potential Impacts of Heavy Rain
The heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and closures of underpasses, particularly in urban regions. Reduced visibility due to the downpours could disrupt travel and lead to traffic congestion in major cities. Vulnerable structures face risks of damage, and there is an increased possibility of localized landslides and mudslides in certain areas.
Agriculture may also be affected, with potential damage to standing crops and horticulture. Riverine flooding is another concern, with further insights expected from the Central Water Commission (CWC).
IMD's Statement on the Severity
In an official release, IMD stated, "Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall expected on 17th and 18th December, with isolated heavy rainfall likely between 16th-19th December." This highlights the severity of the weather and the need for preparedness in the affected regions.
Additional Weather Concerns
Apart from heavy rains, thunderstorms with lightning are forecasted in Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema on December 16 and 17. These conditions pose additional risks to safety and infrastructure.
As the Northeast monsoon brings heavy rainfall, residents and authorities in Tamil Nadu and nearby areas are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions. The IMD's detailed forecast underlines the importance of readiness to manage potential impacts like flooding and traffic disruptions while safeguarding lives and property.
This alert serves as a reminder of the critical role that weather forecasts play in helping communities prepare for and respond to extreme conditions.
