Scattered rainfall is expected to continue across several parts of Tamil Nadu until August 18, especially in northern districts and areas around the Western Ghats. The intensity of rain may differ from one place to another, but the wet weather is likely to keep temperatures bearable in most parts of the State.
Tamil Nadu Rain Alert till August 18
Thunderstorms, which have been occurring frequently since the beginning of August, are also expected to continue. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris and Theni districts on Thursday and Friday. Gusty winds at 40-50 kmph may also accompany the rain.
Tamil Nadu's Several Districts to Experience Rainfall
A weak trough along and near the Tamil Nadu coast is expected to support the ongoing wet weather. Moderate rainfall is likely in several interior and northern districts, including Madurai, Sivaganga, Ariyalur, Salem and Kallakurichi, during Thursday and Friday. Other parts of the State may receive light showers.
The RMC said a low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal, near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast, could indirectly help maintain rainy conditions in Tamil Nadu. As the weather system moves inland, it may increase wind convergence in the lower atmosphere, leading to more thunderstorms.
According to V.R. Durai, Head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, rainfall is expected to increase significantly between August 16 and 18. North coastal districts such as Chennai, Ranipet, Chengalpattu and Villupuram are likely to receive more rain during this period. Other parts of Tamil Nadu may also continue to experience thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, weak southwesterly winds and cooler easterly winds near the coast have been triggering evening thunderstorms. However, northern interior districts may remain warmer. Erode, Tiruchi and Karur could experience relatively high temperatures in the coming days. Tiruchi recorded 39.8°C on Wednesday, the highest temperature in the State.
The RMC expects rainfall to remain normal or above normal this month. Continued rain since early August is likely to reduce Tamil Nadu's seasonal rainfall deficit, which currently stands at 9%, within the normal range.
