Tamil Nadu Introduces Free Travel Scheme for Women in the Enchanting Nilgiris

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has rolled out a free travel scheme for women passengers in its buses, spreading smiles among the scenic hills of the Nilgiris. Transport Minister S S Sivasankar, Tourism Minister K Ramachandran, and Nilgiris MP A Raja jointly inaugurated the service at the Udhagamandalam bus stand.

Nilgiris Welcomes Free Travel for Women:

Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Nilgiris, this free travel scheme is set to make commuting a delightful experience for women in the district. TNSTC operates 99 buses within a 35km radius in the region, benefiting approximately 41,000 women. The launch, strategically timed just before Women's Day, adds an extra layer of joy and excitement for all women travelers in the Nilgiris.

Minister Sivasankar's Announcement:

Transport Minister S S Sivasankar, speaking at the launch, revealed that an average of 50 lakh women utilize TNSTC services across the state daily. Since the inception of the free travel scheme in 2021, a staggering 440 crore free tickets have been issued, highlighting the widespread positive impact of this initiative. Minister Sivasankar expressed satisfaction with TNSTC's effective operation without raising ticket fares.

In addition to launching the free travel scheme, Minister Sivasankar took the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions of TNSTC staff. He handed over appointment letters to 13 individuals employed under compassionate grounds, exemplifying the government's commitment to welfare. Further, seven drivers, who maintained an impeccable record of accident-free service for the last 25 years, were honored with gold medals. Additionally, 43 drivers, with a clean slate in the last ten years, received bronze medals, appreciating their dedication to safety.

Highlighting the government's dedication to public transport, Minister Sivasankar shared that in the last year's budget, the state allocated Rs 2,800 crore to TNSTC. This year, the commitment has grown stronger, with a budget allocation of Rs 3,050 crore. Notably, this substantial increase indicates a focus on enhancing public transportation services without burdening commuters with higher ticket fares.

Expanding the Joy: Upcoming Free Travel in Hilly Areas:

Sources reveal that the government is extending the happiness to other hilly areas like Valparai and Kodaikanal soon. An imminent Government Order is expected to formalize the introduction of free travel in these enchanting locations, making transportation more accessible for residents and visitors alike.
