Snowfall in Popular Tourist Spots:

The winter charm has returned to Kashmir, with Gulmarg welcoming approximately 7 inches of snow, Sonmarg receiving around 3 inches, and Pir Ki Gali, Gurez, and upper reaches of Baramulla each witnessing a delightful dusting of around 3 to 4 inches of snow. Even the upper reaches of Kupwara and Bandipora districts, along with tourist destinations like Sadhna Pass, Farkiyan Gali, and Bungas, have been graced by the snowfall, turning these areas into scenic white paradises.

Weather Update and Forecast:

According to the Director of the Meteorological Department in Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, the plains experienced light to moderate rainfall, while the higher areas received the much-anticipated snowfall. The weather forecast suggests a continued chance of light to moderate rainfall/snow in various places in J&K between January 30-31st. Additionally, there is a possibility of heavy snowfall in the higher areas of Kashmir during this period. Moving into February 1-2nd, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with light rain and snow in many places later in the day.

Cautionary Measures and Road Warnings:

While the snowfall brings joy to the residents and tourists, it comes with its set of challenges. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning about possible road closures in higher areas and crucial passes like Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna and Razdan Pass, Zojila, among others. Travellers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly. Farmers are urged to delay irrigation and fertilizer application and ensure proper drainage in orchards and fields during this period. Taking necessary precautions is essential for safety.

Temperature Update:

The recent meteorological update indicates varying temperatures across different regions. The minimum temperature in the capital city, Srinagar, was recorded at 3.3 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg experienced a chilly -3.5 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam in the south dipped even lower to -0.8 degrees Celsius. In Konibal, the temperature was relatively warmer at 0.8 degrees Celsius. Further south, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of -0.6 degrees Celsius, and Kokernag was slightly milder at -0.1 degrees Celsius. In North Kashmir, Kupwara marked a low of 2.1 degrees Celsius.

Winter Phases in Kashmir Valley:

As the snow blankets the valley, Kashmir enters the 'Chillai-Kalan,' a 40-day harsh winter period concluding on January 29. However, this does not mark the end of winter. Following it, there is the 'Chillai-Khurd,' a 20-day period from January 30 to February 19, succeeded by the 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold), lasting for 10 days from February 20 to March 1.
