On April 30th, Sikkim's Sanglaphu Cho (Sanglaphu Lake) in Mangan district opened its doors to tourists, signifying a momentous occasion cherished by both locals and visitors alike. This revered site, steeped in religious significance, now welcomes tourists while preserving its spiritual essence.
Perched at an impressive altitude of 5,080 meters (16,670 feet), Sanglaphu Cho is nestled approximately 5 kilometers from Yumesamdong, also recognized as Zero Point near Lachung. To honor this significant event, the monks of Samten Choling Monastery in Lachung orchestrated a prayer service, drawing attendees from various sectors including the pipon of the Lachung Dzomsa, local residents, cab drivers, and hotel staff.
Pema Wangdi Lachungpa, the pipon of the Lachung Dzomsa, underscored the cultural and religious significance of Sanglaphu Cho. He encouraged tourists to embark on a spiritual journey while emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior to uphold the sanctity of the lake and its surroundings.
The emergence of Sanglaphu Cho gained prominence subsequent to the closure of the renowned Gurudongmar Lake due to a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Standing majestically at 6,224 meters (20,420 feet) as part of the Dongkya range in the northeastern part of Sikkim, Sanglaphu Cho serves as a vital water source for the Teesta River, with water flowing from the Gurudongmar Glacier to Gurudongmar Lake on its western side, while the southern part is nourished by the Lachung Chu.
