Tirunelveli, District Collector Sukumar confirmed that schools will be closed on October 16, as the rain has been continuous since midnight. The downpour has also affected agricultural fields, especially paddy crops in the district.

Severe Rainfall in Tamil Nadu Leading to School Closures

School closures have also been declared in Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts due to the persistent rainfall. Waterlogging has been reported in certain areas of Tirunelveli, and the Nambiar River is experiencing a rise in water levels due to runoff from the Western Ghats. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has noted that monsoon activity has been very active across Tamil Nadu, with rainfall continuing for the past several days.

Orange Alert in a Few Districts

The IMD has issued an orange alert for rainfall in districts including Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Ramanathapuram, urging residents to be cautious. Other districts such as Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Coimbatore, and the Nilgiris are also expected to experience heavy rainfall. Additionally, places like Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Cuddalore may experience heavy rain, with some areas possibly facing thunderstorms and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 km/h.

The IMD also mentioned that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to completely withdraw from the rest of the country in the next few days. Meanwhile, easterly winds over southern India have marked the start of the northeast monsoon, with cyclonic systems over the Tamil Nadu coast expected to intensify rainfall soon.
