Sabarimala Ropeway Progresses: Installation Ceremony Expected Next Month

The Sabarimala ropeway project, which will improve transportation from Pampa to Sabarimala Sannidhanam, is making steady progress. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) is in the final stage of getting environmental clearance, a necessary step before construction can begin. According to TDB President P S Prasanth, the installation ceremony is expected to take place next month. The entire project is planned to be completed in 18 months.

With an estimated cost of ₹250 crore, the ropeway will make the pilgrimage easier by helping transport goods and assisting in emergencies. Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan has stated that the project includes two stations-one at Pampa Hilltop and another near the Sannidhanam Police Barracks. Additionally, five prefabricated steel towers, 40 to 60 meters tall, will support the 2.7 km ropeway.

For environmental clearance, about 4.53 hectares of forest land will be used for building the stations. The approval process is moving ahead, with project details uploaded on the PARIVESH portal of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. A joint verification by officials has already been completed. "We need technical direction from the Environment Ministry. Once we receive it, we can begin the installation ceremony within a month," said Prasanth.

The ropeway is expected to improve accessibility, making it easier for devotees and officials to manage the pilgrimage site. It will also be useful for emergency services, making Sabarimala safer and more efficient. Authorities hope to complete the project by the next annual pilgrimage season, marking a major step forward in enhancing the Sabarimala experience while respecting the site's sacred environment.
