Pune is all set to take a big step in aviation with the announcement of Maharashtra's first heliport. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol shared this important update, which will boost the city's aviation services. The heliport will be built at the Hadapsar Gliding Centre and will also include an aviation gallery. This project highlights Pune's strong connection to helicopters, as the city has the largest helicopter fleet in India due to tourism, business, and other regional activities.
Hadapsar Gliding Centre Chosen for the Heliport
The Hadapsar Gliding Centre, which is spread across 230 acres, has long been used by gliding fans and trainees. At present, it is managed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). However, the centre will soon come under the control of the Airports Authority of India (AAI). After this land transfer, the plan for the heliport will move forward. "The DPR (Detailed Project Report) for the new project will be prepared after AAI takes over the gliding centre," Mohol said.
Aviation Gallery to Provide Learning and Fun
Along with the heliport, a modern aviation gallery is also being planned. This gallery will offer educational and fun experiences. It will showcase the history of aircraft, from ancient times to the present day. The gallery will also feature flight simulators, digital exhibits, and detailed information about aircraft and aviation. The goal is to improve aviation services in the area and raise interest in helicopter-based travel and education.
On March 4, 2022, a big step was taken when the Ministry of Civil Aviation's Department of Skill Development and Information Technology agreed to hand over the land and property to AAI. This agreement is for 99 years, at a token annual rent of just one rupee. "There is an intention to set up a heliport to bring about a major change in the aviation infrastructure of this area and to promote helicopter-based services," Mohol added.
More Than Just a Heliport
The heliport and aviation gallery aim to do more than just offer helicopter services. The facilities are expected to support medical services, emergency needs, tourism, and business travel. Mohol also pointed out that the location is ideal and could become a major hub for civil aviation in the region. He also mentioned that there are plans to build a second heliport somewhere else in Pune district.
