Pune Metro Services Disruption Due to the Construction on the Metro Extension Projects

Construction work on the metro extension projects between Pimpri and Nigdi and between Swargate and Katraj has stopped due to problems in the supply of ready-mix concrete (RMC), according to officials of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited.

Pune Metro Disruption

The disruption happened after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) took action against several RMC plants in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The authorities accused these plants of environmental violations, pollution, and illegal operations. Because of this action, the supply of concrete needed for metro construction has been badly affected. Over the last three months, PMC has taken action against nearly 30 RMC plants. Some plants were sealed while others faced demolition drives after residents complained about dust pollution, accidents, and environmental problems.

At the same time, the MPCB issued closure notices to 84 RMC units in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad for allegedly not following environmental rules.

Due to the action taken by civic and pollution control authorities, the Pune RMC Association temporarily stopped operations from April 16. The association said there were no clear and uniform rules for operating the plants. However, operations resumed again on Friday.

Reason behind the Disruption

Metro officials explained that large amounts of concrete are needed for building pillars, girders, and other important structures in the metro network. Since many RMC plants remained closed for almost a month, construction on both metro corridors had to be stopped.

Delay in Project Deadline

The Pimpri-Nigdi metro route is planned as an elevated corridor, while the Swargate-Katraj route will be built underground. Officials are now worried that the delay could affect the project deadline. Maha Metro increased construction work so that a major part of the project could be completed before the monsoon season. However, the stoppage in concrete supply may delay the work further once heavy rains begin.
Atul Gadgil stated that concrete is very important for metro construction. He added that because RMC plants remained shut for the past month, construction activities have been suspended, and the project may now face delays.
