Heavy rain and strong winds battered several parts of Kerala on Monday, leading to flooding, uprooted trees, and traffic disruptions. The southern parts of Thiruvananthapuram and the northern districts of Kozhikode and Kannur saw continuous rain and gloomy weather throughout the day. In Thiruvananthapuram, an hour-long downpour caused severe waterlogging

on the Thiruvananthapuram-Thenkasi road, disrupting traffic. The Palode road at Elavattom was also blocked in the evening due to flooding. In Kannur, floodwaters entered houses and shops, and a wall collapsed on a house following heavy rain.
Severe Rainfall Caused Damage
Moreover, severe lightning caused damage in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts. In Mala (Thrissur) and Elanji (Ernakulam), house walls cracked, and electrical equipment was destroyed. In Pallippuram, Thrissur, a family narrowly escaped when a tree fell on their house during the storm.
Orange Alert in a Few Areas of Kerala
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, warning of heavy rainfall. The remaining districts are under a yellow alert. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised people living in landslide-prone or low-lying areas to move to safer locations as a precaution. Residents near rivers and dams have also been urged to relocate early to avoid danger. An orange alert indicates rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow alert means rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
Meanwhile, as many as 11 districts in Kerala are preparing for more heavy rain on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
