Orange Alert in Chennai: IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall in 17 Tamil Nadu Districts

Residents of Chennai and 16 other districts in Tamil Nadu should stay alert, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert. This warning means that heavy rainfall is expected and may cause problems like waterlogging and slippery roads. People are advised to take precautions and stay updated on weather reports.

Orange Alert in Chennai

Districts on High Alert

The IMD has included the following districts under the orange alert: Thiruvallur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Theni, Thoothukudi, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, and Kanniyakumari. These areas are likely to receive heavy rainfall that may affect daily life, especially in low-lying places.

Madurai and Virudhunagar districts are under a yellow alert. This means that they may also get rainfall, but it will be less intense than in the orange alert areas. However, people in these districts should still be careful and stay prepared.

Reason for the Rainfall

The heavy rainfall is due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and nearby South Andaman Sea. Because of this system, changes in the weather are expected in Chennai and nearby areas over the next five days.

Chennai's Weather Forecast

According to IMD, Chennai will see changing weather conditions throughout the week. Today, the minimum temperature is 28°C and the maximum is 33°C, with humidity at 71%. The wind is blowing from the southwest at a speed of 19 km/h, and skies are overcast.

The weather forecast for the coming days is as follows:

May 31: Cloudy skies, temperature between 28°C and 34°C
June 1: Partly cloudy
June 2: Light rain and partly cloudy
June 3: Thundershowers, temperature between 29°C and 34°C
June 4: Partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from 29°C to 34°C

Advice for Residents

Due to the orange alert, authorities are warning people about traffic problems and waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas. Motorists should be extra careful on wet and slippery roads. Although no official notice has been issued about school or office closures, people are watching the news closely for any updates from IMD and local officials.

Everyone is advised to stay safe, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and follow safety tips shared by the government and weather departments.
