A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has become stronger and is expected to hit the coast between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh by the afternoon of May 29. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that this weather system could bring heavy rainfall to many parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata. An orange alert has been issued for several districts in South Bengal, and people are advised to stay prepared for strong winds and heavy showers.

Storm Moving Towards Land at 20 kmph
According to the IMD, the deep depression is moving northwards at a speed of 20 kmph. It was last seen around 60 km southeast of Sagar Island and 110 km east-southeast of Digha. There is a chance that it could turn into a cyclonic storm. The IMD is keeping a close watch on its path and strength to give further updates.
Sea Conditions Dangerous for Fishing and Boating
The weather system is also expected to make the sea rough and dangerous. Warnings have been issued for fishermen to avoid going into the sea, especially in the north and central parts of the Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh until May 30. Marine and coastal activities should be avoided during this period.
Orange Alert for Several Districts
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kolkata, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, East Bardhaman, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, and East Midnapore. These districts may receive 7-11 cm of rain, and in some places, rainfall could go up to 12-20 cm between the morning of May 29 and the morning of May 30. A yellow alert will be in place for May 30 and May 31, which means the weather will still be bad but not as severe.
Other Areas Under Yellow Alert
Districts like Purulia, West Midnapore, Bankura, Jhargram, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum are under a yellow alert from May 30 to 31. These areas may experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, but the risk is lower compared to districts under the orange alert.
Strong Winds and Rainfall Expected
On May 29, strong winds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, are likely to hit parts of Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and Murshidabad. Other places in Gangetic West Bengal may face winds of 30-40 kmph. Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue for the next few days, though temperatures will remain mostly the same.
The IMD has advised everyone to stay in safe places during thunderstorms. People should also drive carefully as heavy rain can make roads slippery. Mumbai, too, is expecting light to moderate rain this weekend, with a yellow alert in place.
As the monsoon begins, this alert reminds everyone of the need to be ready and stay informed during such weather events.
