The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that vehicles without FASTags properly affixed to their front windshields will have to pay double toll fees. This new rule is designed to prevent drivers from avoiding toll payments. If your FASTag is not correctly fixed, you could end up paying twice the regular toll amount. NHAI has also warned that repeated defaulters may be blacklisted.

Why the Change?
FASTags are electronic toll collection systems that make it easier and faster for vehicles to pass through toll plazas. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and ensure a smooth flow of vehicles. However, some drivers have been trying to avoid paying tolls by not fixing their FASTags properly. To stop this, NHAI has decided to enforce stricter rules.
What You Need to Do
Make sure your FASTag is correctly placed on the inside of your front windshield. It should be visible and properly scanned when you pass through toll plazas. If it is not, you will be charged double the regular toll fee. To avoid any inconvenience, check your FASTag placement before starting your journey.
Recording Vehicle Information
NHAI will also use CCTV cameras at toll plazas to record Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs). This will help maintain accurate records of fee charges and vehicle presence in toll lanes. The cameras will capture images of all vehicles passing through, ensuring that those without properly affixed FASTags are identified.

FASTag Costs
If you do not already have a FASTag, you can get one from various banks or platforms. The costs for getting a FASTag include:
1. Tag Cost: The initial cost of the FASTag ranges from ₹100 to ₹200.
2. Security Deposit: Some banks require a refundable security deposit, usually around ₹200 to ₹400.
3. Minimum Balance: You need to maintain a minimum balance in your FASTag wallet, typically around ₹100 to ₹300.
4. Recharge Charges: There may be nominal charges for recharging your FASTag wallet online.
Benefits of Using FASTag
Using FASTag has several benefits. It reduces the time spent at toll plazas, as there is no need to stop and pay manually. It also reduces fuel consumption and vehicle emissions because of the quicker passage. Additionally, using FASTag is more convenient, as it automatically deducts the toll fee from your account.
To avoid paying double toll fees and ensure a smooth journey, make sure your FASTag is properly affixed to your front windshield. This new rule by NHAI is aimed at improving the toll payment system and reducing congestion at toll plazas. Check your FASTag placement before you start your trip, and enjoy the benefits of a faster, more efficient travel experience on India's highways.
