The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) is a much-needed plan to help with the city's traffic problems. This new train system will connect different parts of Bengaluru and its nearby areas, making daily travel faster and easier. The entire project will cover 148.17 kilometers and have four main routes with a total of 57 stations.

Routes of the Four Corridors:
1. Sampige (Corridor 1): This route will run from KSR Bengaluru to Devanahalli, covering 41 kilometers. It will also link to Kempegowda International Airport, making it convenient for airport travelers.
2. Mallige (Corridor 2): This route goes from Baiyappanahalli to Chikkabanavara and is 25.14 kilometers long. It will help improve travel in the eastern and northern parts of Bengaluru.
3. Parijatha (Corridor 3): This 35.52-kilometer route will connect Kengeri to Whitefield, which is known for its large tech companies. Many IT workers will benefit from this route.
4. Kanaka (Corridor 4): The longest corridor, Kanaka, will stretch 46.24 kilometers from Heelalige to Rajankunte. This line is expected to be ready by December 2026, serving the northern and southern suburbs.
Project Progress and Timeline
Once the project is fully done, it will carry around 9.84 lakh passengers daily. This will help reduce the heavy traffic on Bengaluru's roads and provide better public transportation for everyone. The suburban rail will not only make traveling within the city easier but also connect to nearby towns.
Construction for the BSRP has already started. In August 2022, a tender worth ₹859.97 crore was awarded for two corridors. Another tender for ₹1040.51 crore was issued in December 2023, with L&T handling work on Corridor 4.
Future Plans
K-RIDE (Rail Infrastructure Development Company Karnataka Limited) is responsible for carrying out this large project. While most of the work has begun, parts of Corridor 3 (Kengeri to Bangalore Cantonment) still need approval from the Railway Department.
For Corridor 1, the route was revised in June. It will now be built in two parts: Package 1 (Majestic to Yelahanka, 17.63 kilometers) and Package 2 (Yelahanka to Devanahalli, 23 kilometers).
Benefits of the BSRP
Once finished, the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project will make daily travel easier for about 9.8 lakh people. This will help ease traffic jams and connect Bengaluru with its suburbs better. It will also boost real estate and economic growth in the areas served by the new train routes.
The BSRP is a big step towards improving Bengaluru's transportation system. As the city continues to grow, this suburban rail project will help make commuting easier and reduce traffic problems, making life better for everyone in Bengaluru.
