The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced plans for a high-speed expressway connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru. This project aims to provide reliable, year-round connectivity between Karnataka's southern and coastal regions. Spanning approximately 335 kilometers, the expressway is expected to reduce the travel time between the two cities significantly, cutting it down from the current 7-8 hours.

The expressway will feature four to six lanes and will pass through Hassan, bypassing the difficult terrain of the Western Ghats. MoRTH has already initiated steps to prepare for construction. In July, the ministry invited bids from consulting firms to create a detailed project report (DPR). By November, nine firms had submitted their technical bids, and a consultant is expected to be selected by early 2024. Once chosen, the consultant will have 540 days to complete the DPR, paving the way for construction to begin by 2028.
Collaboration and Development
The Karnataka Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will work together to handle road alignment and land acquisition for the expressway. This partnership is essential for addressing the challenges posed by the region's unique geography and ensuring the smooth execution of the project.
The proposed expressway is designed to improve travel efficiency. With its multi-lane setup, it will eliminate many of the bottlenecks and unpredictable conditions that currently affect the existing highway, particularly during the monsoon season. Landslides and congestion are common issues on the current route, often causing significant delays.
Benefits for Travelers and Businesses
The new expressway is expected to bring numerous benefits, including faster and smoother travel. For businesses, it will enhance connectivity between Karnataka's capital and its coastal regions, boosting economic activities and facilitating the transport of goods.
Upon completion, the expressway will not only shorten journey times but also provide a safer and more reliable option for travelers. This development is seen as a game-changer for Karnataka, marking a major step forward in the state's transportation infrastructure.
The Bengaluru-Mangaluru expressway is set to revolutionize travel between the two cities. With its completion, Karnataka will witness improved connectivity, reduced travel challenges, and enhanced opportunities for growth in both the southern and coastal regions.
