Beneficial Concessions and Operations

Presently, NMMT offers a 50% fare concession to senior citizens above 65 years, as well as to students. Additionally, the corporation extends free travel to elected representatives, freedom fighters, journalists, civic employees, individuals with disabilities, and those living with HIV+.

Operating 567 buses across 74 routes, the NMMT facilitates the daily commute of approximately 1.80 lakh passengers. While primarily serving within the NMMC jurisdiction, its services extend to various locations, including Mumbai, Borivali, Bandra, Mantralaya, World Trade Center, Andheri, Mulund, Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan, Badalapur, Khargar Kalamboli, Panvel, Ulve Node, Karanjade, Koproli, and Uran, with plans for further expansion.

A Welcome Move for Senior Citizens

In light of the forthcoming policy, Rajesh Narvekar, the municipal commissioner, emphasized the NMMC's dedication to enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens. In response to their request for complimentary NMMT services, the administrative body is assessing the proportion of senior citizens among the total passenger traffic. The age criterion for this new benefit is also under deliberation.

Narvekar expressed confidence in finalizing the policy by Monday, aiming for its prompt implementation before the Diwali celebrations. The decision aligns with the state government's initiative, which has already implemented a similar provision in its State Transport (ST) buses.
