Reach Nariman Point to Virar in 40 Minutes; Mumbai Coastal Road Extension to Cut Travel Time

In a major step to improve transportation in Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced plans to extend Mumbai's Coastal Road from Nariman Point to Virar in Palghar district. This ambitious project aims to cut down travel time between Nariman Point and Virar to just 35-40 minutes, offering a faster and more convenient route for thousands of daily commuters.

Mumbai Coastal Road Extension

Project Goals and Benefits

The Coastal Road project is already under construction, and this extension will significantly boost connectivity. The new route aims to reduce the heavy traffic congestion on existing roads and provide relief to people who travel between Mumbai and Virar regularly. This extension is part of Maharashtra's larger plan to improve infrastructure and transportation in the region, making travel faster and easier for everyone.

Funding and Project Details

The Japanese government will be supporting this project with an investment of Rs 54,000 crore. Deputy CM Fadnavis has shared that the tender process for the Versova to Madh link is already underway, and work on the section between Madh and Uttan will begin soon. Once completed, the Coastal Road will be a 29.2 km, 8-lane expressway stretching along Mumbai's western coastline from Marine Lines to Kandivali.

The first phase of this Coastal Road project, covering a 10.58 km stretch from the Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, was inaugurated on March 11, 2024. This phase is part of ongoing efforts to ease traffic in Mumbai and improve the city's overall infrastructure.

Positive Impact on Connectivity and Economy

Fadnavis emphasized that extending the Coastal Road will improve transportation within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), benefiting millions of daily travelers. This extension is expected to ease traffic flow and support regional development by creating better travel options. In turn, improved infrastructure is likely to help the local economy by reducing travel times and making commuting smoother.

A Step Toward Modern Infrastructure

The Coastal Road extension highlights Maharashtra's commitment to building modern infrastructure that meets the needs of its growing population. As the project progresses, residents and visitors alike can look forward to quicker and more efficient travel across one of India's busiest cities. This development will not only improve daily life for commuters but also contribute to Mumbai's long-term growth and modernization.

Once finished, the Coastal Road extension from Nariman Point to Virar promises to be a valuable addition to Mumbai's infrastructure, marking a new era in efficient urban travel.
