Nagpur is set to create a new milestone in urban infrastructure as MahaMetro has started work on Maharashtra's longest balanced cantilever (CLC) bridge over a river. The bridge will be part of the Hingna corridor under Metro Phase-2. Officials confirmed that the structure will span 271 metres across the Vena

River and will stand 16 metres above the existing road bridge.
Unique Feature of the Bridge
This bridge is built without any supporting pillars in the river, which makes it stand out from the rest. Instead, a special construction method will extend the bridge outward from both ends, ensuring strength and stability while maintaining the river flow without any hindrance. The central part of the bridge will be 120 metres long, with 79 metres on the Nagpur side and 72 metres on the Hingna side. Moreover, 15 metres on each end will connect smoothly to the current road network.
Reason Behind the Implementation of Modern Design
Officials stated the design was chosen to protect the river ecosystem and also leave space for the expansion of the existing bridge. Once completed, this bridge will be longer than the under-construction CLC bridge at Kamptee-Uppalwadi (258 metres) and the Cotton Market bridge (231 metres). Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) is building the bridge, with designs prepared by its Ayesa team. VNIT Nagpur and an independent consultant will verify the design. The bridge is expected to be completed in 18 months and will greatly improve connectivity along the Hingna corridor. So far, 15% of the overall work on this section has been completed.
Benefits for Local Residents and Commuters
This CLC bridge is part of the 6.7-km Reach-3A stretch of the Hingna Metro line, which includes seven stations. The total project cost is ₹378 crore, with ₹45 crore allocated only for the bridge. To avoid traffic problems during construction, the approach roads have been temporarily widened, and pile load testing has begun. Officials stated the cantilever technique eliminates the need for temporary supports, reducing inconvenience to commuters and residents.
