Mumbai is all set to open its first elevated forest walkway, a project designed to connect urban life with nature. Inspired by Singapore's famous forest walkways, this innovative project links Kamala Nehru Park to the serene Doongerwadi woods, offering Mumbaikars a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken the lead in this ambitious project to enhance urban greenery and provide a one-of-a-kind walking experience.
A Glimpse Into the Walkway
Located at Malabar Hill, this 705-meter-long walkway winds through the lush forest, giving walkers uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea. The deck is crafted primarily from wood to preserve the natural landscape, ensuring that water flow along the hill slopes and the movement of wildlife are not disturbed. Adding to the walkway's appeal are unique features such as a birdwatching area and a glass-bottom viewing deck, offering visitors a thrilling view of the forest below.
The walkway's entry and exit points are conveniently located at Siri Road, just behind Kamala Nehru Park, making it easily accessible.
Eco-Friendly Design
The project places a strong emphasis on sustainability. By minimizing the use of concrete, the walkway ensures harmony with its natural surroundings. The wooden deck blends seamlessly with the greenery, and the design showcases a thoughtful approach to environmental conservation. This ensures that the project not only provides a unique experience but also protects the ecosystem it traverses.
Cost and Timeline
The elevated walkway comes with a budget of ₹25 crore. Initially planned at ₹22 crore, the cost increased slightly due to taxes like GST. Construction faced challenges because Malabar Hill is a designated silent zone, which restricted working hours. Despite these hurdles, nearly 90% of the civil work is complete. Auxiliary tasks like electrification, painting, and building restrooms and ticket counters are currently in progress.
The BMC aims to complete the walkway by New Year, marking a significant step in Mumbai's journey toward sustainable urban development.
