Mumbai Rains: Train Services Hit, Flights Delayed; Harbour Line Restored After 15-Hour Disruption

Mumbai has been severely affected by heavy rainfall, causing widespread disruption to local train operations, flight schedules, and daily life across the city. Extensive waterlogging on railway tracks led to multiple delays and cancellations over the past two days. On Tuesday, a local train was stranded at Sion Station due to flooding on the tracks.

According to PTI reports, the Central Railway's Harbour line resumed operations around 3 am on Wednesday after being suspended for more than 15 hours. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that by 8:36 am, services on the Central, Western, and Harbour lines, along with BEST bus operations, had largely returned to normal.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway, comprising the Harbour, Western, and Central lines, continued to experience delays even after partial restoration. Data from the Mindicator app at 9:45 am showed fast trains from CSMT to Kalyan running 23 minutes late, while slow trains were delayed by 5 minutes. Kalyan to CSMT fast trains were 21 minutes behind schedule, and slow trains were 14 minutes late. Earlier, at 9:05 am, fast trains from CSMT to Kalyan were delayed by 10 minutes, slow trains by 7 minutes, Kalyan to CSMT fast trains by 20 minutes, and slow services by 19 minutes. CHG to Virar fast and slow trains faced delays of 7 and 9 minutes, respectively.

Western Railway reported that 17 trains had been canceled as of 5:39 am on Wednesday. By 8:30 am, Western Railway local trains were running up to 35 minutes late, while Central Railway services faced delays of around 45 minutes. Swanil Nila, Chief PRO of Central Railway, confirmed the resumption of Harbour line services at 3 am after water levels receded following the halt that began on Tuesday at 11:15 am.

The heavy rains have affected other parts of Maharashtra as well, resulting in several fatalities and widespread disruption to transportation, including roads, subways, and rail networks. Flight operations have also been impacted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, prompting closures of schools, colleges, and government offices. Pune district was also placed under a red alert due to the persistent rainfall. Meteorologists have attributed the intense downpour to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, amplified by strong monsoon winds.

Western Railway further announced via X that train No. 10115 (Bandra Terminus - Madgaon Express), scheduled for August 20, would originate from Kaman Road station instead of Bandra Terminus due to the disruptions caused by heavy rains.
