Schools and colleges in Thane and Palghar are likely to remain open on Friday, July 31, even though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in both districts.
No School Holidays Announced
As of Thursday evening, the Maharashtra government, district administrations and local civic bodies had not announced any holiday for educational institutions. Students and parents are advised to stay updated through official school messages and local administration notifications before leaving for school or college.
Maharashtra's Districts are Under Rainfall
According to the IMD, Thane and Palghar are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain at a few places on Friday. The weather department has also predicted thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 50-60 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 70 kmph. An orange alert indicates people should remain alert and be prepared for weather conditions that could disrupt normal activities.
Mumbai Rain Alert on Friday
Meanwhile, Mumbai continues to remain under a yellow alert. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph in some areas. The weather department said there is a very high chance of these weather conditions affecting Mumbai, Thane and Palghar during the day.
Advisory for Residents
The IMD has advised residents in the orange-alert districts to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and follow all safety instructions issued by local authorities. People have also been urged to stay indoors whenever possible during intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
While Maharashtra has not announced school closures, several districts in neighbouring Gujarat have declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Friday after the IMD issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. The affected districts include Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand, Kheda and Dahod.
Authorities in Surat have also taken precautionary measures. People living in low-lying areas are being shifted to safer places ahead of the expected heavy rain. The Surat Municipal Corporation has started checking the safety of hoardings, lowering high-mast street lights and closing some roads to reduce the risk of accidents during strong winds and heavy rainfall.
