Mumbai Rain Alert on 1 August: Mumbai and Several Other Districts have been Issued Multiple Alerts

Mumbai is likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for the city. According to the weather department, Mumbai may experience thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph at isolated places.

In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the IMD has issued an orange alert for Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts. These areas are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph during the next 24 hours.

The IMD has stated that Mumbai will remain under a yellow alert until August 2, indicating heavy rain is likely to continue. Palghar and Thane are expected to see an improvement in weather after Saturday, with the orange alert likely to be reduced to a yellow alert. However, Raigad will continue under an orange alert until Sunday.

Mumbai Monsoons

Although Mumbai received less rainfall than normal in June because the southwest monsoon arrived around 15 days late, rainfall increased sharply in July. The Santacruz weather station recorded 1,491.9 mm of rain between July 1 and July 30, which is 66% higher than the monthly average. The Colaba observatory recorded 1,176.8 mm, about 41% above normal.

Weather officials said rainfall picked up from the first week of July and became heavier again during the last week of the month due to weather systems affecting Gujarat. At present, a shear zone and low-pressure system over India's western coast are bringing heavy rain to the Konkan region, including Mumbai. This system is expected to move north over the next 48 hours, after which rainfall in Mumbai is likely to reduce gradually.
