The Maharashtra government has approved the extension of Mumbai Metro Line 5A at a cost of nearly ₹4,063 crore, giving a major boost to transport connectivity in Ulhasnagar and nearby areas. The new metro corridor will connect Ulhasnagar with Sindhu Nagar station, fulfilling a long-pending demand of residents and improving

daily travel for thousands of commuters. Although Metro Line 5 faced delays due to land acquisition and design changes, especially in crowded areas, with fresh approvals and funding, authorities expect work on the extension to move forward more quickly.
Mumbai Metro Line 5A
The project is part of the larger Mumbai Metro expansion plan being carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The proposed Metro Line 5A will extend the existing Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro corridor further towards Ulhasnagar. Officials believe the new route will reduce pressure on overcrowded roads and suburban railway services while offering faster and more comfortable travel options.
Inclusion of Stations
According to reports, the extension will cover around 11.8 km and include several stations across important residential and commercial areas. One of the stations will be named Sindhu Nagar, which has been a long-standing demand from residents of Ulhasnagar. BJP MLA Kumar Ailani said the approval marks an important step toward better infrastructure and urban development in the region.
How will this Metro Project Improve Connectivity?
The project is also expected to support future growth in Thane, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar by improving connectivity to business hubs and residential areas. Along with the metro project, the government is also working on road improvements, water supply projects, and redevelopment plans in Ulhasnagar.
Earlier, Metro Line 5 faced delays because of land acquisition and design changes, especially in crowded areas. However, with fresh approvals and funding now in place, authorities expect work on the extension to move forward more quickly.
