Mumbai Metro Line 5: The Central Govt has Approved the Revised Plan for its Kalyan and Ulhasnagar Extension

The central government has approved the revised alignment of Mumbai Metro Line 5, paving the way for its extension to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, which was issued through a notification on August 28. The extended section, known as Metro 5A, will connect Durgadi with Kalyan and will also have a separate spur from Bhoirwadi to Ulhasnagar.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 Existing & New Metro Stations

The existing Metro 5 corridor will run between Thane, Bhiwandi and Durgadi. Its stations include Kapurbawdi, Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Temghar, Rajnouli, Govegaon, Kongaon West and Kongaon East.
The newly approved extension will include stations at Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Path, Shanti Nagar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Chowk, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. Kalyan and Ulhasnagar are expected to become important growth centres as the metro network expands.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 Revised Plan

Under the revised plan, a small section near Bhiwandi will be constructed underground. The car shed for Metro 5 will be located at Kasheli. MMRDA is expected to invite tenders for construction of the three new sections soon, after which work can begin. The project is likely to provide commuters with another option apart from suburban trains.

At present, many residents in the areas covered by the proposed metro depend heavily on Central Railway's suburban services. Some passengers also have to use long-distance trains for their journeys.

The development is expected to improve public transport connectivity for people living in Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and nearby areas. The project is being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is responsible for constructing several metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
