Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A have moved one step closer to starting passenger services after receiving safety clearance for their trains. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has approved the rolling stock for both corridors. However, some other mandatory safety approvals are still required before passenger operations can begin. A partial opening is expected later this year.
Mumbai Metro Line 4
Metro 4 will connect Wadala, Ghatkopar, Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh, while Metro 4A will run between Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh. Together, the corridors will cover around 35.2 km, with Metro 4 covering 32.32 km and Metro 4A covering another 2.88 km. The first phase planned for operations will cover the Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction section. This stretch is about 10.5 km long and has 10 stations. Trial runs on the corridor began in September 2025.
Mumbai Metro's Arrangements
An unusual arrangement has been planned for the initial operations as the dedicated Mogharpada depot in Thane is not ready yet. Until the depot is completed, Gaimukh station will be used for keeping and servicing the trains. A special pit has been constructed there for maintenance work.
Six train rakes will initially be used to operate services. However, the trains specifically ordered for Metro 4 and 4A have not yet arrived. Therefore, trains currently available at the Charkop car depot, which are being used on Metro Lines 2A, 7 and 9, are likely to be deployed temporarily on the new corridor.
In February 2025, contracts were awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom for rolling stock and signalling. They are expected to supply 39 driverless six-coach trainsets, consisting of 234 coaches. These new trains will require separate safety certification before being introduced into passenger services.
