Passengers travelling on Bengaluru's Namma Metro Purple Line will have to expect a slight increase in travel time for the next few weeks. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced a temporary speed restriction on a section of the Purple Line because of maintenance and inspection work.
Bengaluru Metro's Purple Line Restrictions
The speed restriction will apply between Benniganahalli and Baiyappanahalli stations. Trains on this section normally operate at speeds of up to 65 kmph. However, the maximum speed has now been reduced to 40 kmph as a safety measure while maintenance work is being carried out on the Open Web Girder (OWG) connecting the two stations.
BMRCL has said that the maintenance work involves technical inspection and necessary repairs to the structure. A specialised technical team is monitoring the girder and carrying out the required work. The temporary speed restriction has been imposed to ensure that trains continue to operate safely while the work is underway.
Importantly, metro services on the Purple Line will not be suspended because of the maintenance work. Trains will continue to run normally across the route, but passengers travelling through the affected section may experience a short delay due to reduced speed.
The Purple Line connects Challaghatta and Whitefield, making it an important route for thousands of daily commuters. Those travelling during busy hours, particularly office-goers and students, have been advised to allow a few extra minutes while planning their journeys.
According to the information released by BMRCL, the maintenance work is expected to continue until the second week of October 2026. Once the work is completed, the technical team will inspect the structure and the speed restriction will be reviewed.
BMRCL has said the temporary measure is intended to ensure the safe, smooth and reliable operation of metro services during the maintenance period.
