Mumbai Metro Advances Line 12A: An 18.4-Km Elevated Corridor Linking Manpada, Kalyan to Taloja

Mumbai's growing metro network is set to expand further with a new elevated corridor aimed at improving east-west travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed Metro-12A, an 18.4-kilometre route that will connect Manpada in Kalyan to Khutari village in Taloja. A detailed

project report has already been prepared for this new line. The planned route will pass through Kalyan-Shilphata Road and National Highway 48 before linking with Metro Line 12 near Taloja.

Additional Spur Line

According to an MMRDA official, there is also a possibility of adding a spur line, which is a short branch from the main route. This could connect Metro-12A to the Thane Bullet Train station, offering better connectivity with the upcoming high-speed rail network.

Mumbai Metro Corridor's Total Stations

The proposed corridor is expected to have around 10 to 12 elevated stations, which will mainly serve the busy eastern part of the MMR, as many people currently depend heavily on suburban local trains for daily travel. The new metro line is expected to reduce congestion and make commuting easier in this region. Officials also said that parts of Metro-12A may share tracks and stations with the planned Metro-14 line, which will run between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata.

Total Project Cost

The total project cost will include expenses for civil construction, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications, and trains. Since the entire route will be elevated, major land acquisition is not expected. Recently, MMRDA announced its ₹48,000 crore budget for 2026-27, with most of the funds allocated to metro and infrastructure projects. While work on Metro Line 12 is progressing well, construction on the 45-km-long Metro Line 14, set to be the longest in the MMR has just begun.
