Impact on Airlines

Several major airlines were affected by this outage. In the United States, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines experienced issues with their operations. This problem was also felt in India, where carriers such as SpiceJet and Akasa Air faced disruptions. The outage led to problems with flight check-ins, reservations, and boarding passes.

SpiceJet updated on X "We're currently facing a technical issue in providing updates on flight disruptions. Our team is actively working to resolve this issue. We regret for any inconvenience caused and will update you once the issue is resolved. Thank you for your patience and co-operation."

Akasa updated on X "Due to infrastructure issues with our service provider, some of our online services, including booking, check-in and manage booking services will be temporarily unavailable. Currently we are following manual check-in and boarding processes at the airports and hence request passengers with immediate travel plans to reach the airport early to check-in at our counters. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and want to assure you that our teams are working with our service provider to resolve the same at the earliest.

Indigo updated on X "As our systems are impacted by an ongoing issue with Microsoft Azure, we are experiencing high volumes at contact centre. Please contact us only if your travel is within 24 hrs.

Air India Express said "Digital infrastructure issues have temporarily impacted online and airport operations across multiple airlines and airports globally. Please plan your travel and keep sufficient time in hand for airport procedures. We regret the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time".

Specific Airline Disruptions

The Microsoft cloud outage, which affected the Azure platform, was due to a surge in Domain Name System (DNS) requests combined with a code defect. This problem caused widespread service interruptions. Several airlines reported significant issues:

- Frontier Airlines: Temporarily grounded all flights.

- Allegiant Air: Grounded 130 aircraft.

- Sun Country Airlines: Grounded 50 aircraft.

- Delta Airlines: Experienced communication issues.

- American Airlines and United Airlines: Both faced problems with flight communications.

Travelers' Precautions

If you are traveling, it is crucial to stay informed about any updates. Check with your airline regularly for the latest information on flight status and any potential delays. Airlines are working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible, but some disruptions may still occur.

In response to the outage, Akasa Air has posted on social media: "Due to infrastructure issues with our service provider, some of our online services, including booking, check-in, and manage booking services will be temporarily unavailable. Currently, we are following manual check-in and boarding processes at the airports. We request passengers with immediate travel plans to arrive at the airport early to check-in at our counters."

Microsoft's Response

Microsoft is actively investigating the outage to prevent future occurrences. They are working to address the issues and restore services fully. While the exact cause of the disruption is still being examined, the company is committed to resolving the problem as quickly as possible.

As this situation develops, travelers should keep a close eye on updates from their airlines and be prepared for potential delays.
