Kochi's Metro Project

The project is based on an all-electric bus network and was implemented in partnership with the Kerala government. It also received financial support from the French agency AFD. The service began on January 15, 2025, with 15 electric buses, seven charging stations, and a dedicated depot. Over time, it expanded to cover six major routes, with small route changes made to meet passenger demand. Currently, the buses together run about 2,300 km every day and have covered nearly seven lakh kilometres in total.

Which Metro Corridor Has Performed Well?

Among the routes, the Aluva-CIAL corridor has performed the best in terms of passenger numbers. Routes linking the Medical College and Kadavanthra-Panampilly Nagar have also seen good ridership. According to Loknath Behera, Managing Director of KMRL, the feeder bus service is an integral part of Kochi Metro's comprehensive transport plan. He said its success shows how electric feeder buses can improve last-mile connectivity, increase public transport usage, and support eco-friendly urban development. The service has also helped raise passenger numbers and revenue for both Metro Rail and Water Metro.

Reason Behind Success

One key reason for its success is the use of data analytics. By improving service planning and charging schedules, KMRL achieved a 15% rise in ridership and revenue. An advanced analytics system was set up to monitor fares, bus movement, and charging operations.

KMRL is also focusing on safety by training bus staff in road safety and behaviour. Public feedback continues to guide route changes and service improvements. In the future, live bus tracking and onboard information systems are planned, making travel more reliable and comfortable.
