Mumbai is preparing to open parts of two important new metro lines by December 31, bringing major relief to daily commuters. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated that sections of Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 2B will become operational before the end of this month.

Mumbai Metro Line 9
Metro Line 9, also known as part of the Red Line network, will initially run between Dahisar East and Kashigaon. The full line is about 13.6 km long, with most of it elevated and a small underground portion. Phase 1 of this line, covering the Dahisar-Kashigaon stretch, is expected to open by the end of 2025, while the entire project is likely to be completed by late 2026. The line will have several stations, including Dahisar East, Kashigaon, and others across Mira Bhayandar and parts of the Thane district.
Mumbai Metro Line to Connect With Metro Line 7
Metro 9 will connect smoothly with Metro Line 7 and Metro Line 2A, and in the future, it will link with Metro Line 3. This connectivity is expected to significantly reduce travel time for Mira Bhayandar residents. For example, a journey from Mira Road to Andheri, which currently takes around 1.5 hours by road, could be completed in under 50 minutes using the metro network. MMRDA estimates that Metro 9 could carry around 8.5 lakh passengers daily, increasing to over 11 lakh by 2031, while cutting travel time by up to 75%.
Mumbai Metro Line 2B
Metro Line 2B, also the Yellow Line, is a fully elevated corridor running 23.6 km from Andheri West to Mandale in Mankhurd. The Diamond Garden to Mandale section will open first. This line will have 20 stations and is expected to attract more than 10 lakh daily passengers by 2031.
Mumbai Metro Line 2B to Improve Commutation
Metro 2B will improve east-west travel, reduce road congestion, and offer easy interchanges with other metro lines, suburban railways, the monorail, and major highways. Together, these two metro lines are set to make travel across Mumbai faster, smoother, and more convenient.
