Meerut Metro Set to Spearhead India's Fastest Service at 120 km/h, Cutting City Travel Time

The upcoming Meerut Metro is expected to become India's fastest metro service, with trains running at a top speed of 120 kmph, and will help reduce travel time across the city and make daily commuting quicker and more convenient. The metro will run on a 21-kilometre corridor from Meerut South

to Modipuram, with 12 stations along the route. Even with stops at every station, the entire journey is expected to take only about 30 minutes.

Features of Meerut Metro

A unique feature of the Meerut Metro is that it will share the same tracks and infrastructure as the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains. This is the first time in India that city metro services and regional rapid transit trains will operate on the same network. This integrated system is designed to improve connectivity within the city as well as with nearby regions.

The metro trains will be made of modern stainless steel and will have a lightweight design. They will be painted in bright fluorescent green, blue, and orange colours. Each train will have three coaches and will be energy-efficient, using regenerative braking systems. The trains will also support advanced technologies such as Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Train Operation.

Each fully air-conditioned train can carry over 700 passengers, including 173 seated travellers. Facilities like cushioned seating, luggage racks, USB charging ports, and reserved seats for women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities will be available.
Strong focus has been placed on safety and accessibility. Stations and trains will have CCTV cameras, platform screen doors, lifts, wheelchair spaces, and stretcher areas.

How will this Metro Project Benefit Passengers?

The project is expected to boost connectivity and economic activity in the city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the service soon, making Meerut the fifth city in Uttar Pradesh to have a metro network. Until now, the fastest metro speed in India was 110 kmph on the Delhi Airport Express Line.
