Bengaluru's upcoming Metro Phase 3, known as the Orange Line, will be delayed and expected to be completed by May 2031, at least a year later than planned. This delay is due to a major change in the design, which will include double-decker flyovers on certain sections, despite Bangalore having

experienced it earlier. While these structures aim to reduce future traffic congestion, they will also increase the project cost by about 5% and require more land for larger stations and road expansion.
Additional Details on Bangalore's Orange Line Metro
The project was officially launched in August 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inauguration of the Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra). At that time, the foundation stone for Phase 3 was also laid. The Orange Line will cost over ₹15,611 crore and cover 44.65 kilometers with 31 elevated stations. It will consist of two routes, JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (32.15 km) and Hosahalli to Kadabagere (12.5 km).
Construction is expected to begin around December 2025 or early 2026, following the tender process in November. The work will be split into at least eight packages and is likely to take about five and a half years to complete. The Yellow Line includes South India's first rail-cum-road viaduct near Ragigudda, which connects to Central Silk Board and serves as a model for Phase 3.
The Orange Line will boost strong connectivity by linking to other metro lines, the Green Line at JP Nagar and Peenya, the Purple Line at Mysuru Road, and the Blue, Red, and Pink Lines at Hebbal. After completion, Phase 3 is expected to serve around 7.85 lakh daily passengers, improving metro access in underdeveloped areas like Magadi Road and the western Outer Ring Road.
